In July of 1139, a quarrel between the local burghers and the monks of the Benedictine monastery over Shrewsbury's annual Fair leaves a merchant dead.

Saint Peter Fair Chronicles Of Brother Cadfael Book 4 edition by Ellis Peters Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Continuing my march through the Cadfael Chronicles...I would place this as second best among the 4 I have read - real treat for those who read One Corpse Too Many, as the author and characters comment on the happenings in that story - I've liked how each of the books has concentrated on a different part of medieval life - #1 (Morbid Taste) on monastic life and the importance of relics; #2 (One Corpse Too Many) on The Anarchy and tension between supporters of Maud and Stephen; #3 (Monk's Hood) on Cadfael's medical talents; and this one, #4, on the market towns and medieval "fairs" and the relationship between the townspeople and the abbey

This one fell a bit flat in terms of mystery - there really wasn't much of a surprise by the end who the main culprit was - but that's not to say there wasn't sufficient suspense - and it had the most thrilling scene yet, in the 4 books I've read anyway, in a climactic scene towards the end - very well done -

Saint Peter Fair Chronicles Of Brother Cadfael Book 4 edition by Ellis Peters Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Brother Cadfael never disappoints, and I love that mysteries are solved without technology! Rather, great common sense, understanding of the world around, and knowledge of human nature. I love the respect and kind maturity of the man as well as Peter's effort to recreate a bygone time. Always a great read!
I never pass up being able to read one of Ellis Peters' great mysteries and those about Brother Cadfael are the best. Brother Cadfael is Welsh, a brother of the Benedictine order, coming late in life to the order after having spent his adulthood as a Crusade solider. His level of observation and understanding of human nature is unparalleled and never fails to astound and amuse.
This is a read that you'll surely enjoy and return for more. Enjoy!
Who am I to question Ellis Peters writing? She has created a genre of books unexpectedly wonderful. I admit to wondering at how good a book set in this period and in a religious environment could possibly hold my interest. I am now anxious to begin the next in the series. She weaves a wonderful tale that is fresh each time. I highly recommend this series.
I have read a number of Cadfael books and have liked them very much but this was a bit disappointing. The dialog was, at times, so convoluted that I couldn't make it out. I would have to re-read, a few times just to skip over that section. The descriptive text was often the same. As a result, the story did not flow smoothly for me.
Just about every thing you want in a Cadfael Thriller. Like earlier stories, adequate early space is used to set the stage, and give you a solid basis on which future events occur. There were enough characters introduced that the victim was somewhat of a surprise. From then on the pace picks up linearly until the villain is exposed. When all hope seems lost............. well, read the book. The ending is not quite as complete as previous Cadfael stories, but close enough to "happily ever after".
Really enjoyed this Brother Cadfael mystery. On the eve of the annual fair, a merchant from Bristol is murdered. The initial suspect is the son of a Shrewsbury's shoemaker. Ellis Peters does a great job of revealing clues little by little until you, and the characters discover the assassin at the same time. Brother Cadfael and Hugh Berringer work wonderfully together. Not only do they have to determine who killed the merchant, but who is ransacking his wares and coffin. And what is this nefarious person hoping to find? Emma, the dead merchant's niece, becomes suspect because of her nature. Early on, we see she knows more than what she is telling. She has a good reveal at the end.

Hope you enjoy Brother Cadfael at Saint Peter's Fair.
This 12th century mystery series by Ellis Peters take place in a fog of civil war, where the English and Welsh were raiding each other’s borders and supporting one or another claimant to the English throne Empress Maud or King Stephen. In spite of the ongoing violence, the author suffuses her novels with a deep sense of peace and contentment in the monastic life. A monk from the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul at Shrewsbury, Brother Cadfael, the ex-Crusader-turned herbalist is her solver of murders and mysteries of the heart. Ellis weaves a rich tapestry of his daily life on the war-torn Welsh border.

This fourth novel in a series of 21 mysteries, "St. Peter's Fair," begins in July of 1139 as the monks from the Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul prepare for the three-day annual fair in honor of their namesake saint. The local merchants appeal to Abbot Radulfus for a share of the money raised by the fair, in order to repair the damages from the siege of Shrewsbury the prior year (see "One Corpse Too Many," the second novel in this series), but he turns them down. Thomas of Bristol, a wealthy wine merchant is setting up his booth at the fair when he is approached by a group of young men, sons of the local merchants who make the same plea to him. He knocks one of them down, and a brawl ensues. When Thomas of Bristol's corpse is dredged out of the river the following day, the young man he knocked down becomes the prime suspect in his murder.

"St. Peter's Fair" has one of Ellis Peters' most dastardly villains--a true sociopath with no redeeming features. The embedded love story is also unusual in that the heroine initially chooses the wrong man and almost loses everything before she realizes her mistake.

I am sure that if you've read this far into the Brother Cadfael mysteries, you will want to continue to the end. It will be a very satisfying and worthwhile journey.
